Abstract: Freeform optical shapes or optical surfaces that are designed with non-symmetric features are gaining popularity with lens designers and optical system integrators. Manufacturing and testing details will be discussed for freeforms as well as current manufacturing tolerancing limits. Challenges and future work in manufacturing and testing of extreme freeforms are addressed. The state-of-art precision optics fabrication and coating capability and products of Optimax Systems are introduced. A potential match for high-end optical system manufacturing in China is discussed.

Biographical sketch:
Jessica DeGroote Nelson is the Director of Technology and Strategy at Optimax Systems, Inc. She graduated from The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester with her Ph.D. in 2007. Dr. Nelson returned to the University of Rochester to earn her M.B.A. from the Simon School in 2013. In addition to working full time at Optimax, she is currently an adjunct faculty member at The Institute of Optics teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in optical materials, fabrication and testing. Dr. Nelson is an active member in both OSA an SPIE.

Joseph Spilman is the Director of Sales & Marketing at Optimax. He joined Optimax in 2014 as the Business Development Manager and now leads the Sales & Marketing groups. Joe has more than 15 years of business development, program management and engineering experiences in the optics, photonics, laser and advanced materials industries. Prior to joining Optimax, Joe worked at ArmorLine Corp., where he led and managed the start-up of a capital- intensive advanced transparent ceramic manufacturing business. He also previously worked at II-VI and Optimax. He holds a Bachelors degree in Optics from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the Saunders College of Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
